The recent stormy weather, that brought some damage to farming and residential areas in Cape Town and up in the North of the country, had little effect on South Africa's baby veg exports. There is also growing international market demand for the baby vegetables from the Southern tip of Africa. According to Etienne Taitz, Manager at Afrex 2003, it was business as usual for them. "Due to our production that is spread across South Africa and Swaziland, we are able to balance things out. If it rains in Cape Town, we have a wide scope and cover any shortfall from other production areas."

He says business is growing well with more and more growers coming on board to help meet the constant demand. "We airfreight the baby veg worldwide throughout Europe, Singapore, Hong Kong and the Gulf region. We don't export to the US and Americas. We supply the Horeca sector, that's our market. We export a full range of baby veg, edible flowers, micro herbs and chillies all year round. Come winter or summer, we continue with production to existing customers. Our overseas demand continues to grow. Business is looking very positive, our clients are happy to take other products too. It often happens that they say, can I have a pallet of baby pineapples or figs, we sort of diversify to other products demanded by the same clients."

Taitz says, "We grow all over South Africa and Swaziland to achieve good production from the different climatic conditions."

Kenya is a fellow African country that has seen increased export activity of a range of fresh produce. "We have an export office at Nairobi airport. We are also able to add fresh cut herbs as well as other veg to our range exporting from Kenya," concludes Taitz.
